Los Alamos National Laboratory Design Engineer (Engineer 1/2) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

Contribute to a dynamic team of facility engineering professionals that provide engineering solutions across a wide variety of buildings at one of the most important research facilities in the world. Los Alamos National Laboratory is looking for an enthusiastic junior-level engineers with an interest in building systems and infrastructure to work in the Engineering Services – Engineering Project Delivery (ES-EPD) group. This posting is for multiple Design Engineering positions within the following disciplines: Architectural, Electrical. Instrumentation and Controls, Mechanical, Pressure Safety, Welding, Fire Protection, Civil. Structural.

This position will be filled at either the Design Engineer 1/2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Design Engineer 1 ($83,300 - $136,200)

As a Design Engineer 1, you will work with a team of engineers that are primarily responsible for LANL facility and utility planning, design, and construction. Accordingly, you will participate in scoping, design, analysis, and construction support for all aspects of facility projects. You will develop design drawings, specifications, and test/inspection plans as part of a design team.

Design Engineer 2 ($91,800 - $151,400)

In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level you will assist junior level engineers with their development of design projects, develop design proposals for new work, and independently develop drawings, specifications, and test/inspection plans for senior level review.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Develop Contract Documents consisting of drawings and specifications to define changes to buildings and infrastructure. Incorporate applicable design requirements including nuclear safety requirements.

  • Effectively communicate engineering solutions both verbally and in writing for management, customers, peers, and craft personnel.

  • Knowledge of engineering principals, codes and standards

  • Ability to work in a dynamic environment as a member of a multi-discipline team of engineers and designers

  • Perform engineering calculations to support design changes.

  • Perform work in accordance with the Conduct of Engineering (CoE) and applicable Federal, State, and Laboratory codes and standards.

  • Represent the design agency through interface and coordination with other engineering disciplines and the customer’s representative during design and construction.

  • Obtain, evaluate and compare equipment selections from manufacturer’s representatives.

Additional Job Requirements for Design Engineer 2:

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires: Independently lead all activities listed under the Design Engineer 1 position; may be assigned independent work or tasks based on the complexity of the task.

Education/Experience at Design Eng 1 level: Bachelor of Science in Engineering.

Education/Experience at Design Eng 2 level: Bachelor of Science in Engineering degree with 2 years of relevant experience implementing the requirements described above.

Desired Qualifications: Engineer in Training Certificate; ability to produce designs utilizing AutoCAD tools and work processes; knowledge of DOE and LANL Engineering Standards and Conduct of Engineering principals and procedures.
