Los Alamos National Laboratory DAQ Training Instructional Systems Designer and Specialist (Training Specialist 2) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

Join Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) where we solve national security challenges through scientific excellence; named a ‘Top 20 Government Employer’ and the highest-ranked DOE lab on Woman Engineer magazine’s list. The Training Group within Weapons Facilities Operations (WFO) is responsible for providing training on a range of topics to meet the needs of the Weapons Engineering Divisions and programs. As a Training Specialist for WFO, you will work with a team of innovative training professionals in the Operations Support (WFO-OS) group and provide programmatic and operations training support to the Office of Design Agency Quality (DAQ).

As a Training Specialist you will utilize your skills and expertise to assist Design Agency (DA) management with the design, development, delivery, and management of the DA training Program. This will include working closely with DA organizations to identify training needs and provide interpretation and guidance based on division and institutional training documents, policy and requirements. Training support may also include:

  • Providing proxy and proctoring functions onsite for students

  • Completing tasks in LANL’s Learning Management System (UTrain), such as: Assignments, Registration, Credits, Removals, Exam/Quiz Editor, Curriculum, Reports

  • Utilizing LMS, Worker Qualification and Authorization System (WQAS), and records management systems to track and report training and qualification status

  • Supporting Classroom training: Classroom Reservations, Course Material Preparation, Course Registration, Course Completions, Class Scheduling in UTrain

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Instructional Design and Development

Ability and experience in applying instructional system design and development using the systematic approach to training (SAT) - analysis, design, development, implementation, evaluation. This includes experience in researching and identifying training content and training requirements to support learning objectives in a range of training topics, and to meet Federal and state laws, regulations, orders, manuals and standards, as well as other contractual requirements. Experience with developing, monitoring, and evaluating training including developing metrics, data gathering and analysis, trending, tracking, and reporting.

Team Dynamics & Communication Skills

Demonstrated ability to work in a cooperative team environment. Demonstrated experience in the development of a variety of instructional materials and presentations. Ability to work with key stakeholders (management, subject matter experts and federal oversight personnel) to ensure training programs meet customer needs and regulatory drivers.

Personal Leadership

Ability to work semi-autonomously in a fast-paced environment with multiple and changing priorities. Ability to work with customers and Subject Matter Experts in the Design Agency directorate, divisions and groups. Self-motivated and a capable problem solver.

Learning Management Systems & Business Systems

Understanding of and working level knowledge of LANL’s learning management system (UTrain) or a similar information technology (IT) training system to structure and track training items and programs. Experience in developing, implementing, and maintaining training data management systems. Advanced-level experience with Microsoft Office including demonstrated ability to produce advanced Word documents and PowerPoint presentations.

Professionalism and Customer Service

Communication to internal customers, training staff, and external contract facilities is a continuously utilized skill. As such, clear and concise communication of diverse data sets, as well as a willingness to hear criticism and needs is critical. This skill must be maintained while managing multiple, complex, and overlapping tasks at once.

Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree and 4 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:


Working knowledge of Laboratory policies and procedures pertaining to training including P781-1, Conduct of Training, and the related P781 series documents, and Department of Energy (DOE) orders and standards pertaining to training including DOE O 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, Qualification, and Certification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities.

Additional Technical Skills

Experience in developing online training using Articulate products, video production and recording, visual design, and image selection and creation. Experience in using performance-based training techniques.
