Los Alamos National Laboratory Control Systems Research & Development Electrical Engineer (R&D Engineer 1/2) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

The Explosive Applications and Special Projects Group (M-6) within Dynamic Experiments Division (M) is seeking a qualified Electrical Engineer to contribute to development and rapid-prototyping of diagnostics, control systems, and embedded systems. M-6 conducts physics research involving the initiation of energetic materials by mechanical, thermal, and electromagnetic mechanisms. Areas of study include high-explosive-driven pulsed power, non-shock initiation of high explosives, application of special energetic materials, and special security projects in service to the Laboratory and nation.

This position will be filled at either the R&D Engineer 1 or 2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

R&D Engineer 1 | $85,400 – $139,600

The successful candidate will work in the M-6 electronics shop providing support for all experiments and projects that require control systems, diagnostics, or embedded systems. Rapid-prototyping equipment is available to assist the candidate in their task. The Level 1 position is expected to:

  • Assist other staff in the design, assembly, programming, testing and fielding of embedded systems and control systems used in explosives testing.

  • Design and fabricate test fixtures.

  • Help design, characterize, fabricate, and field capacitive discharge units used in explosives testing.

  • Deploy high-speed imaging equipment on active experiments.

  • Analyze data from experiments.

R&D Engineer 2 | $94,100 – $155,700

In addition to the duties of the lower level, the Level 2 position is expected to:

  • Develop new methods or techniques, using creativity leading to new or improved capabilities.

  • Assist in the development of intellectual property and contribute to reports, journal papers, and conference presentations.

  • Participate in external working groups, collaborate with other organizations within the Laboratory, and provide peer reviews.

  • Work with team members and customers to develop strategic plans to maintain and advance experimental programs and capabilities.

  • Mentor students, junior staff, and peers in technical and professional growth.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

The R&D Engineer 1 position requires knowledge of and experience contributing to the following aspects of assigned projects under regular direction and supervision:

Engineering: Education and experience in computational or electrical engineering.

Design: The design, planning, and execution of research and development projects, including test plans.

Drafting: Design drafting practices, geometric tolerancing, and engineering specifications.

Delivery: Working to a defined scope, schedule, and budget, both independently and as part of a team.

Communication: Strong interpersonal, presentation, and written skills; demonstrated by relationships built, briefings, and presentations.

Additional Job Requirements for the R&D Engineer 2:

In addition to the requirements listed above, qualification at the higher level requires:

  • Demonstrated independent contributions that benefit a broad spectrum of projects; including proven approaches, solutions, and leadership in the design, drafting, execution, and communication of a team’s engineering deliverables.

  • Demonstrated experience mentoring.

Education/Experience at the lower level: Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) accredited institution and 2 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Education/Experience at the higher level: Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution and 4 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

Mechanical Design: SolidWorks experience is desired. The applicant will have access to a laser cutter, PCB mill, and 3D printer.

Electrical Design: KiCad and/or Altium experience is desired for the design and development of embedded systems. The applicant will have access to a PCB milling machine and a local library of components.

Programming: Experience with Python, C++, C, and Assembly Language.

Diagnostics: Familiarity with electrical, optical, and RF diagnostics fielded on most experiments, e.g., piezo pins, fiber optic time-of-arrival probes, Rogowski coils, b-dot probes, Faraday rotation, PDV, inductive probes, capacitive probes, and differential probes. Experience with Shimadzu, Kirana, or Phantom high speed imaging devices.

Control Systems: Experience with programmable logic controllers.

Location: This position will be physically located in Los Alamos, NM.
