Los Alamos National Laboratory Construction Superintendent (Superintendent 2/3) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

These positions will be filled at the Superintendent 2 and Superintendent 3 levels. Selections will be dependent on the skills of the selected candidates. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Superintendent 2 ($81,600 – $133,400)

Directs the sequence of work for multi-discipline, bargaining unit, craft workers, operating within assigned areas. Ensure facility modifications continuously adhere to engineering designs, engineering document control, specifications, quality standards, schedules, and budgets. Work closely with System Engineers, Construction Managers, Superintendent Leads, and Project Managers. Will work independently, but may be under the oversight of a Superintendent 3. Project size is typically <$500k.

Superintendent 3 ($98,900 - $165,100)

This position is responsible for, and lead, projects >$500k. Superintendent 3 will provide oversight to Superintendent 2s as necessary. May initiate the investigation of abnormal events, incidents, and/or accidents to identify the root cause and assist in implementing appropriate corrective actions. May serve as a Control Account Manager (CAM) responsible for planning, budgeting, managing and controlling costs and schedule performance for a project or subproject and serve as a point of contact for project controls, including account scope, schedule, budget and technical performance. Ensure work packages realistically represent the duration and budget necessary to perform work and perform variance analysis reviews, determine cause and effect of schedule or cost variance and define achievable corrective action plans. May be expected to present project management performance plans, status updates, trends, or issues to federal sponsors.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with construction management including a broad range of the following: systems engineering design and constructability, safety/authorization basis, configuration management programs, work control, procurement procedures, facility control systems and earned value management systems.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of all phases and complexity levels of construction projects, upgrades and renovations including participating in constructability reviews of the design process, familiarity with the ML determination process and the potential impacts to construction cost and schedule.

  • Knowledge of lock-out/tag-out policies and procedures.

  • Working knowledge of an Earned Value Management System as demonstrated through previous work assignments.

  • Demonstrated ability to work in a unionized labor environment with excellent communication and teaming skills.

  • Experience managing resources in an efficient and cost-effective manner.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with experience preparing and presenting reports.

  • Position typically requires a bachelor’s degree and a minimum five years of experience in maintenance and/or construction, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Additional Job Requirements for (Superintendent 3):

In addition to the Job Requirements outlined above, qualification at the (Superintendent 3) level requires:

  • Applicant should display advanced knowledge and experience with construction management/supervision including a broad range of the following: systems engineering design and constructability, safety/authorization basis, configuration management programs, work control, procurement procedures, facility control systems and earned value management systems.

  • Applicant should display advanced knowledge of all phases and complexity levels of construction projects, upgrades and renovations including participating in constructability reviews of the design process, familiarity with the ML determination process and the potential impacts to construction cost and schedule.

  • Advanced knowledge of an Earned Value Management System as demonstrated through previous work assignments.

  • Position typically requires a bachelor’s degree and a minimum seven years of experience in maintenance and/or construction, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Work Environment: Outdoors, working overtime or irregular schedule, working off-shift/rotating schedule, operation of motor vehicles, work in a noisy environment, work near sources of ionizing radiation, work near sources of non-ionizing radiation, headgear or head protection, safety goggles or eye protection, hearing protection.

Desired Skills

  • Applicant should display working knowledge of LANL Zero-Accident Safety programs, or respective industry program.

  • Applicant should display a working knowledge and/or experience performing construction mods in and operating Nuclear Facility and/or High Hazard Facility.

Lower Level Education Required (Superintendent 2): Bachelor’s degree and a minimum five years of experience in maintenance and/or construction, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Higher Level Education Required (Superintendent 3): Bachelor’s degree and a minimum seven years of experience in maintenance and/or construction, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.
