Los Alamos National Laboratory Computer Scientist Quark (Scientist 2) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

The Weapons Research Services, Weapons Mission Technology (WRS-WMT) group is looking for a computer scientist who will research, analyze, design, develop, implement, and manage advanced content and document management systems , pushing the envelope to develop state-of-the-art tools, templates, and systems with advanced integrated search capabilities to support the design, development, review, implementation, and publishing of process control documents at LANL’s Plutonium Processing facility. The successful candidate will play a key role in assisting the nuclear engineers, scientists, and technicians in providing the tools to develop and manage procedures. As a Scientist 2, your duties could include:

  • Ensuring the safe operation of highly complex and potentially dangerous equipment and processes by providing user document management systems, such as Quark and Documentum, on classified networks;

  • Designing, developing, managing and configuring document content models, building templates, links, publishing tools, and create workflows;

  • Leading the work with managers, stakeholders, customers, and end users to analyze and identify user requirements, determine system features and functionality, perform system testing, verification, validation, and implement computer application tools;

  • Creating comprehensive software documentation;

  • Leading and working as part of a team to research and develop new integrated search tools for the Weapons software portfolio of systems enabling scientists and engineers to locate documents on the full array of classified weapons data systems;

  • Leading the software development work to coordinate resources, monitor timelines, and plan, track, and execute to the project plan;

  • Leading the collaboration on projects with team members, other laboratory computing organizations, and other DOE laboratories doing similar work, guiding the research, evaluation, and recommendations around the implementation of new or existing software features and emerging technologies; and,

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Technical Knowledge:

Advanced knowledge and experience in web authoring and computer programming including the ability to write and edit code in HTML, XML, XSML. Thorough knowledge and experience in the design, development, and implementation of computer content and document management systems.

Software Development:

Demonstrated experience in the software development and sustainment lifecycle to include design, development, modification, testing, debugging, evaluation of software to meet technical and functional requirements, maintenance, and decommissioning of software. Experience contributing to the development of technical standards.

Software Engineering:

Knowledge of software engineering, research, design, and development methodologies, tools and processes, including software development methodology framework, source code control, application development tools and techniques, database design, development and management, programming languages, and component integration.

Computing Environment:

Thorough knowledge and experience with hardware and operating systems including system architectures, network infrastructures, and client server principles.

Education/Experience : Positions requires a Bachelor’ degree in a STEM field from an accredited college and university and 4 years of related experience, typically with post-doctoral research experience at a university or national lab or equivalent experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:


Actively participates in professional societies, complex interactions, special assignments, and/or external collaborations. Participates in external working groups and/or assists in organizing meetings and colloquia.

Technical Knowledge:

Expert knowledge and extensive experience with Quark XML Author, Quark Publishing Platform, QuarkXPress, QuarkXPress Server, Quark Author Web Edition, and QPP Publishing Service. Expert knowledge and demonstrated proficiency in the use and administration of Quark and Documentum software and search engines.

Technical Problem Solving:

Extensive experience installing, configuring, administering and troubleshooting web authoring, content management, and document management software. Demonstrated advanced technical skills and independent judgement to solve complex technical issues.

Technical Communications:

Demonstrated effective written and verbal communication skills with all levels of personnel including management, administrators, scientists and engineers.

Computing Environments:

Knowledge of Application Program Interface (API) frameworks and REST services. Extensive experience and demonstrated proficiency in hardware and software integration and testing.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 .
