What You Will Do

At LANL, we solve national security challenges through scientific, technological, and engineering excellence. The Weapons Research Services, Weapons Mission Technology (WRS-WMT) group is seeking a computer scientist who will research, analyze, design, develop, implement, and manage advanced system applications to support Computer Aided Design, Manufacturing, and Engineering data while pushing the envelope to develop state-of-the-art processes, templates, and systems with advanced integrated search capabilities to support the design, development, review, implementation, and collaboration of LANL’s Weapons software suite of tools and technologies.

The selected candidate will possess the expertise to provide the tools necessary for weapons engineers, scientists, designers, systems engineers, and technicians to manage data over the lifecycle of the products. This candidate will work with Product Data/Lifecycle Management (PDM / PLM) solutions such as Windchill PDMLink. In addition, the candidate will work with weapons engineering groups incorporating the latest approaches in Digital Engineering and Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) to develop technical solutions and best practices for complex systems engineering challenges. Tasks include requirements analysis, software design and development, deployment, testing, and maintenance, as well as, advancing application security, documentation, and training the scientific and engineering communities.

The selected candidate for this position will be enthusiastic, innovative, and creative, as well as, work well with the team, user community, vendors, and other DOE Laboratories. The selected candidate for this position should have the ability to program in Java, Java Script, HTML, SQL, and XML and strive to foster a collaborative environment and partnerships to develop and deploy integrated solutions and explore emergent, digital technologies.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Support the research and development (R&D) of the software and system needs of the weapons organizations as it relates to managing content on the unclassified and classified networks.

  • Lead and work as part of a team to research and develop new integrated search tools for the Weapons IT portfolio of systems, enabling scientists and engineers to locate documents and data on the full array of weapons data systems.

  • Research, evaluate, and make recommendations around the implementation of new or existing software features and emerging technologies.

  • Collaborate on projects with team members, Design Agency and Production Agency engineers, other laboratory computing organization, and other DOE laboratories doing similar work.

  • Provide technical direction and/or coordinate activities with team members and other relevant personnelto analyze, design, develop, configure, test, verify, validate, and implement engineering application tools.

  • Integrate enterprise-wide technical solutions in support of expanded mission capabilities.

  • Develop the technical approach, using creativity in applying standard practices and procedures, and lead technical decisions, including selections of technical alternatives for assigned work.

  • Promote a mutually respectful work environment that is free from discrimination and harassment supports cooperation, teamwork, and resource sharing.

  • Maintain state-of-the-art technical expertise and knowledge within discipline, and develop new skills in related disciplines. May attain additional certifications and/or qualifications, which may include more advanced educational degree.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Advanced knowledge of software engineering, research, design, and development methodologies, tools and processes to include software development methodology framework, source code control, application development tools and techniques, database design, and component integration. Thorough understanding of the Principles of Scientific Integrity.

  • Thorough knowledge and experience in developing and implementing technical research and development projects, including the formulation and testing of hypotheses, investigation of alternative solutions, and recommendation of solutions to technical problems.

  • Thorough knowledge and experience in formulating and presenting solutions to technical audiences and readerships.

  • Experience developing innovative advanced concepts, theories, methods, techniques and approaches to address specialized problems. Experience applying scientific principles, techniques, methods and tools to provide solutions for an extensive and diverse range of complex and/or ambiguous problems where analysis of situations or data requires in-depth evaluation of variable factors. Experience indesigning and developing new methods, techniques or approaches to address critical technical problems, using creativity in applying standard practices and procedures, and leading technical decisions, including selections of technical alternatives.

  • Advanced knowledge and extensive experience in computer programming to include the ability to write, test, and edit code inJava, Java Script, HTML, SQL, and XML.

  • Thorough knowledge and experience with hardware and operating systems including system architectures, network infrastructures, and client server principles.

  • Experience with customizing COTS applications and configuring graphical user interfaces (GUI).

  • Demonstrated ability to analyze existing programs or formulate logic for new systems, use the scientific method to understand program performance, devise procedures, use algorithms, perform coding and test/debug programs, and prepare supporting documentation.

  • Demonstrated experience in the software development and sustainment lifecycle to include design, development, modification, testing, debugging, evaluation of software to meet technical and functional requirements, maintenance, and decommissioning of software. Experience contributing to the development of technical standards. Thorough knowledge and experience with hardware and operating systems including system architectures, network infrastructures, and client server principles.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Working knowledge or familiarity with Product Data Management (PDM) and Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems and/or Configuration Management (CM) and Requirements Management systems.

  • Development experience in the PTC ThingWorx Industrial Innovation Platform.

  • Working knowledge or familiarity with Manufacturing Data Management (MPM) systems.

  • Working knowledge or familiarity with Mechanical Computer-Aided Design (MCAD) and/or Electrical Computer-Aided Design (ECAD) tools.

  • Knowledge of Application Program Interface (API) frameworks and REST services.

  • Demonstrated record of success in developing and maintaining strong working relationships with staff, administrators, and other internal and external partners.

  • Knowledge and understanding of the Nuclear Security Enterprise’s (NSE) Design Agency (DA) and Production Agency (PA) roles, relationships, and system integrations.

  • Active DOE Q Clearance.

Education Required: Position requires a Bachelor’s degree in a related Science or Engineering field from an accredited university, and a minimum of five years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. At this level, a Master’s degree is highly desirable.
