Los Alamos National Laboratory Computational Physics and Methods Postdoc in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

The Computational Physics and Methods Group CCS-2 at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is seeking to fill this position with a postdoctoral research associate. CCS-2 staff develop techniques and scientific software that deliver high-fidelity numerical solutions at scale for important LANL mission areas. The applications that CCS-2 scientists target include linear and nonlinear neutral particle transport (neutrons, gamma rays, thermal X-rays), charged particle transport, high-energy density physics, plasma and fluid dynamics, astrophysics, metalcasting, welding and additive manufacturing, and climate and ocean modeling. Our group consists of approximately 45 staff scientists, about 15 postdocs, 30 students, and numerous university affiliates. CCS-2 actively collaborates with researchers across LANL, at other national laboratories, in industry, and with faculty members at various universities.

This specific opening is for a new project (starting Oct, 2020) focused on developing high fidelity simulation tools for Inertial Confinement Fusion (ICF) and High Energy Density (HED) physics. The successful applicant will be part of a team that is developing new mathematical algorithms and techniques for coupled multiscale multi-physics simulations of kinetic plasmas, radiation, electromagnetic effects, and nonlinear laser plasma interactions.

Postdoctoral Researcher: Competitive salaries are based on the date the PhD degree requirements were completed or the degree was awarded. The successful candidate will:

  • Work as an integral member of a multidisciplinary team that is developing multi-physics simulation codes for ICF and HED physics.

  • Develop computational models that run at scale on the latest high-performance computers.

  • Document work products in written form, e.g. code documentation, memoranda, journal publications.

  • Present work achievements to the team and management, sponsors, and when appropriate to the scientific community at technical conferences.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Advanced knowledge and experience with numerical algorithms in one or more of the following areas: linear algebra, nonlinear and linear solvers, time integration, multi-physics and multiscale coupling.

  • Programming experience with C, C++, or Fortran for scientific applications.

  • Demonstrated effective interpersonal skills, as well as excellent oral and written communications skills.

  • Demonstrated initiative for continuous learning and development in the area of expertise.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with parallel programming and modern heterogeneous computing architectures (e.g. MPI, GPU programming, threading).

  • Experience working effectively in a collaborative software development environment with tools such as version control systems (e.g. git, mercurial).

  • Experience developing large-scale multi-physics simulation frameworks.


Ph.D. in applied mathematics, computer science, physics, engineering, or another related field completed within the past five years or soon to be completed.
