Los Alamos National Laboratory Computational Nuclear Data Graduate Student in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

The Nuclear Data Team at Los Alamos National Laboratory is looking for several students to work with us in 2021. Some of the projects we are working on include:

  • Create Python bindings for our codes that interact with nuclear data libraries.

  • Develop machine learning algorithms for nuclear data.

  • Benchmark calculations in MCNP.

We are looking for highly motivated, early graduate students in nuclear engineering, physics, or related fields. The Nuclear Data Team is responsible for delivering high-quality libraries which describe the nuclear physics used in host codes such as MCNP and PARTISN. Our data is used internally at Los Alamos National Laboratory and by scientists, researchers, and students around the world. We maintain a number of codes used internally and around the world for the analysis, processing, and production of our nuclear data libraries. In addition, we are also involved in research to improve the efficiency of delivering nuclear data to the host codes and of the structure and use of the nuclear data.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • To be eligible you must currently be admitted oractive in a graduate program.

  • Eligibility is limited to students who initially have and maintain a cumulative 3.2/4.0 GPA

  • Experience with a programming language such as Python, C++, or Fortran.

Education/Experience

We are looking for early graduate students in nuclear engineering, physics, or related fields.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience linking C++ or Fortran to Python.

  • Experience with modern software development practices, e.g., version control, pull requests, testing, etc.

  • Experience with nuclear data.

  • Experience with scientific codes such as MCNP, Zartisn, or NJOY.

  • Knowledge about machine learning techniques.

Additional Details
