Los Alamos National Laboratory Computational Material Science Postdoc in Los Alamos, New Mexico
What You Will Do
The Materials and Physical Data group (XCP-5) in the Computational Physics Division at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL)is seeking a highly motivated post-doctoral candidate in the area of computational material science, with an emphasis on mesoscale deformation mechanisms in polycrystalline metals. A successful applicant will work with computational materials science models to investigate defect evolution in metals at the nanoscale with particular interest in the interaction of dislocations and interfaces such as grain boundaries. This position is primarily focused on applying and extending a phase field based dislocation dynamics model to study dislocation-grain boundary interactions. A successful applicant will be expected to publish results in peer-reviewed journals and present at well-known conferences. This work is part of a larger project. A successful applicant will also be expected to work well in a team environment and have the ability to coordinate sharing information with lower and higher length scale models. In addition, a successful applicant will be expected to coordinate with experimentalists to validate new model enhancements incorporated as part of the project.
XCP-5 is an interdisciplinary group which develops, implements, and validates constitutive models (material strength, damage and failure, etc.), equations of state (EOS), and physical data libraries including opacities and nuclear cross sections for use in large-scale simulation codes; additionally, some group members collaborate in the design and analysis of small-scale and integral validation experiments for material models and physical data. XCP-5 offers an exciting, flexible, scientifically challenging work environment with many opportunities to collaborate with the broader LANL scientific community.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Proficiencyinone or more meso- and/or macro-scalecomputational modeling method such as: discrete dislocation dynamics (DDD), Peierls-Nabarro (PN)-models, phase field, and/or crystal plasticity.
Expertise inthe mechanical behavior of metals and alloys.
Materials scienceexpertisewith particular focus on dislocation behaviors, grain boundaries and/or interfaces.
Code development experience, including experience using high performance computing.
Proficiency in Fortran, C, C++, or Python.
Excellent written and communication skills in English.
Education/Experience :APh.D. in Materials Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Solid Mechanics or related fields is required. The candidate must be within 5 years of completion of Ph.D. at time of being proposed for review by the committee, or will have completed all Ph. D. requirements by commencement of the appointment.
In depth understandingof dislocation and defect theory.
Expertise incrystallographyand/ormicrostructural evolutionmechanisms.
Expertise in grain boundary structure and behavior.
Knowledge of machine learning techniques.
Active or ability to acquire a Q clearance.(Non-US citizens are eligible for this position.)
