Los Alamos National Laboratory Casting Metallurgy Postdoc in Los Alamos, New Mexico
What You Will Do
The Nuclear Materials Science group (MST-16) at Los Alamos National Laboratory is seeking a postdoctoral candidate to grow a casting modeling validation capability. MST-16 is working with other organizations to stand up a solidification science laboratory where the end goal would be to compare simulations to experimental data to assess the accuracy of simulations.
The candidate, depending on the skill set, would contribute in the following area(s): 1) design and build a furnace to support modeling/validation of vacuum induction casting, 2) executing well-characterized and diagnosed casting experiments in a wide range of conditions and 3) to conduct casting simulations using a LANL developed code.
The successful candidate will be a highly self-motivated individual with hands on laboratory skills, capable of performing research both independently and within a team, and communicating their research to stakeholders. Exceptional candidates with a simulation focus will also be considered.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Familiarity with metals processing, such as casting, welding, or other similar fields and experience with common engineering materials (steels, aluminum and titanium alloys)
Candidate must have hands-on experience working in a research or industrial laboratory
Ability to obtain a Q clearance,whichnormallyrequiresU.S.Citizenship
Education/Experience: A PhD in Metallurgy, Materials Science, or related field completed within the last five years or soon to be completed is required.
Experience installing and maintaining laboratory equipment
Ability to effectively program data acquisition systems using common languages like LabView
Exposure to modeling and simulation workflows and the ability to effectively program using common languages like Python, Matlab, C++, and Fortran
Experience in adapting to new requirements for projects and demonstrated flexibility in learning new areas of research
