Los Alamos National Laboratory Bioscience Post Master Student in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

The Bioscience Division is seeking a motivated, enthusiastic post-master’s student interested in phage biology research. The goal of the project is to develop a novel high throughput platform to rapidly discover and isolate novel and effective bacteriophages against bacterial pathogens. The successful candidate will work with a team of scientists, technicians and students. The ideal student must be meticulous in their work, self-starting, independent, and able to communicate in a professional manner. The term of the appointment is 1 to 2 years. Depending on the performance of the studentand funding availability, there are opportunities to extend the appointment by transitioning to other types of LANL positions.

The student will also act as a representative for the Biosecurity and Public Health Team by attending group and team meetings. Responsibilities include conducting research and reporting results back to the team at weekly meetings. In addition, the student is encouraged to attend seminars and other LANL functions to expand his/her knowledge base and broaden interests. The student will also have the opportunity to participate in networking and social events.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

General background in biology, molecular biology, and microbiology

Demonstrated experience with molecular biology and virus cultivation techniques

Familiarity with good laboratory practices and biological experiment design

Demonstrated competency with computers and software applications for word processing, data processing, and data visualization

Ability to maintain and record work performed, data obtained, as well as write and follow detailed protocols

Ability to understand and present research results clearly and succinctly in both written and oral formats

Ability to comfortably work independently and as part of a team

Ability to work a minimum of 40 hours per week on a consistent schedule

Ability to manage time and see tasks to completion

Desired Qualifications:

Ideally, the candidate has interest and/or experience in one or more of the following: virus and phage biology research; Demonstrated experience in : isolating and characterize bacteriophage.

Education: A master’s degree in biology, molecular biology, microbiology, or related technical field obtained at the time of hire or within the past 3 years, but have not yet been accepted and enrolled in a graduate program.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . No Clearance: Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.
