Los Alamos National Laboratory Astrophysical Fluids and Plasma Postdoc in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

Applications are invited for several immediate postdoc openings in astrophysical fluids and plasmas. We seek candidates with background in fluid dynamics, plasma physics, turbulence and transport, including disk instabilities,magnetic reconnection, magnetized compressible t urbulence, and particle energization and transport. Knowledge about accretion disks around black holes and protostars, high-energy astrophysics, and gravitational wave science is highly desirable. Some of the on-going research topics are related to binary black holes in AGN disks, disk instabilities in protoplanetary disks, particle acceleration and transport in relativistic astrophysical jets and accretion disks, pulsar wind nebulae, turbulence in the solar wind (e.g., Parker Solar Probe measurements) and astrophysical environments, and the extended MHD effects on transport in high-energy density plasma conditions, turbulence and dynamo in HED plasmas. We also have several state-of-the-art simulation tools in accretion disks, plasma kinetic, MHD and hybrid simulations, along with extensive computing resources.

While we will give full consideration to all applicants, we have immediate openings for the following areas:

  1. Evolution of binary black holes in AGN disks;

  2. Gas and dust instabilities in protoplanetary disks;

  3. Particle energization and transport in high-energy astrophysical environments;

  4. Compressible magnetized turbulence in laboratory, space and astrophysics.

The successful candidates are encouraged to collaborate on the current projects carried out at LANL, and they will also be able to develop his/her own research projects. Postdocs will have many opportunities to collaborate with other researchers at LANL in astrophysics, plasma physics, and computational sciences. The initial appointment is for two years, with a possible third year extension.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Experiences in theoretical and computational astrophysics and plasma physics.

Education/Experience : PhD in related fields completed within the past five years or soon to be completed.

Desired Qualifications: Experiences in theoretical and computational astrophysics and plasma physics. Successful candidates are encouraged to collaborate on current projects carried out at LANL, and will be encouraged to develop their own research programs.

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 .
