Los Alamos National Laboratory AOT-MDE Group Leader (R&D Manager 4) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

The Accelerator Operations and Technology Division (AOT) is seeking a Group Leader (R&D Manager 4) to head our Mechanical Design Engineering (AOT-MDE) group. The AOT-MDE Group Leader will also serve as part of the AOT management team to provide leadership for the division.

The AOT-MDEgroup provides expertise, support, and technical leadership in all aspects of mechanical design, engineering, and mechanical related technical needs of the 800-MeV, 800-kW capable Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE) accelerator complex. The AOT-MDE group is comprised of experts in room temperature and superconducting Rf structures, particle accelerator diagnostics, accelerator water-cooling systems,vacuum systems, high-power beam target system design and construction, and DC and pulsed magnet systems.

The AOT-MDE Group Leader is responsible for defining the vision and strategic plan for the AOT-MDE group that will ensure accelerator operations that can meet existing and future demands. This position will oversee a broad range of basic and applied accelerator science and technology programs for national security and non-defense applications, including participation in the research and development of projects both internal and external to the Los Alamos National Laboratory.In addition, the successful candidate will provide technical leadership, program development, personnel management, and administrative management of the AOT-MDE group.The successful candidate will be responsible for an annual budget of roughly $12-14 M.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Demonstrated experience managing mechanical systems at an accelerator or large research facility or at a facility covering a broad range of mechanical systems that show some overlap with those found at large research facilities.

  • Demonstrated supervisory and leadership experience and skills in setting priorities and assigning tasks, performance evaluation, mentoring of employees, coaching, team building, and conflict resolution.

  • Demonstrated ability to develop technical programs in partnership with other line and program organizations.

  • Demonstrated success in meeting or exceeding the expectations of customers and stakeholders and in meeting organizational mission commitments and deliverables.

  • Demonstrated ability to nurture and develop both engineering and technical support staff.

  • Demonstrated ability in effective communication with subordinates, peers, and superiors.

  • Demonstrated ability to at times work within a matrixed management environment.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated ability to successfully manage, either directly or matrixed, a large group of greater than 30 people.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage a multi-million-dollar budget.

  • Knowledge of Laboratory, DOD, DOE, and other national programs of relevance to the Group and Division's activities.

  • A clear vision of what a modern mechanical operations and maintenance program for a particle accelerator should look like and how this relates to both existing technology and what technology might look like in the coming years.

  • Demonstrated success in setting priorities for and leading efficient, graded implementation of safety, security and safeguards, environmental management and other core Laboratory business requirements.

  • A Masters degree or higher is preferred.

  • Active Q clearance

Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor’s degree in a related field and 8 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A Master’s Degree or higher is preferred.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. The Accelerator Operations and Technology (AOT) Division provides leadership in accelerator science, engineering, and operations in support of National User Facilities and in solving national security challenges. A principal element of the division's portfolio is operation, maintenance, and improvement of the injector, beam transport, linear accelerators, proton storage ring, and targets of the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE), a multipurpose National User Facility that provides intense neutron and proton pulsed beams to support multidisciplinary fundamental and applied research and medical radioisotope production.

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.
