Los Alamos National Laboratory 3D Designer/Developer (Software Developer 1/2) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Software Developer 1/2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

The Software and Applications Engineering (SAE) Division supports Los Alamos National Laboratory’s (LANL) enterprise application and performs software application development support, database development and administration, software quality management, and enterprise application consulting. The Site Infrastructure, Mission, and Programs Software Group (SAE-3) provides software engineering services, custom application development, and commercial off the shelf application implementations.

The selected candidate will work as a 3D Designer and Developer to support the development and maintenance of institutional and departmental VISIBLE Team applications. The selected candidate will be assigned to various projects based off the needs of the organization and at the discretion of SAE-1 management.

The Application Software Developer will collaborate with other engineering disciplines, program participants, sponsors, and computer scientists to develop immersive tools, information systems, and applications that are essential to executing our missions. Keeping up-to-date on emerging technologies and tools will be expected.

Software Developer 1 ($62,800.00 - $99,800.00)

Working along side some of the brightest minds, you will support the development and maintenance of various internal and external applications. You will also help develop and maintain Laboratory web based applications. Specific duties include tasks associated with the upkeep of various laboratory applications, the design and development of new applications and standards, and ensuring compliance with Laboratory specifications, standards, and security policies

The selected candidate will work as a team member to design, develop, and maintain multiple 3D models, virtual/augmented reality environments, simulation tools to address needs related to nuclear facility security, on-the-job training, event reconstruction, and proof of concepts.

  • Address technical requirements within project timeline and budget

  • Optimize models for varying levels of technological hardware requirements

  • Work with customers to understand requirements, translate procedures and processes into an underlying data structure, implement a GUI, and train end users.

  • Successfully work within the constraints of a secure environment

Software Developer 2 ($75,400.00 - $122,900.00)

In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level you will provide mentoring to junior staff members. We are looking for someone who likes to self-initiate work with limited supervision, use independent judgment for determining course of action to accomplish objectives, and use a broad range of advanced technical skills to solve complex technical issues.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Software

  • Strong 3D modeling skills using Maya (Autodesk)

  • Strong skills texturing and lighting in Maya

  • Working knowledge of rigging and animating in Maya

  • Working knowledge of Adobe Suite (specifically Photoshop, After Effects and Illustrator)

  • Proactive and able to take ownership of tasks and projects

  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail

  • Strong work ethic with a willingness to work to meet critical deadlines, requiring flexible work hours, occasional travel, and a positive attitude

  • Self-motivated team player

  • Experience in traditional software application development in C#, C++, Java and/or JavaScript

  • Minimum of Bachelor’s degree education 3D design, New Media, Creative Media, Media Arts, Game Design or professional equivalent

  • 2+ years of professional 3D Art/Design experience

  • Applicants must have the ability to obtain and maintain DOE clearances, which normally requires US citizenship.

Problem Solving

Solving unique Web development and production problems by using analytic ability and innovative thinking to meet budget, timetables, and objectives. Experience and demonstrated skill in conducting research, investigating alternative solutions, and recommending solutions to problems.

Project Management

Project management experience demonstrated through the direction and responsibility for numerous complex projects involving a number of components such as resources, budget, and schedule.

Programmatic Development

Demonstrated experience designing and developing large applications from the ground up.

Strategic Communication

Excellent writing and verbal communication skills with the ability to negotiate and use proper judgment in order to resolve conflicts, solve problems, increase efficiency, and improve services and products with minimal management help.

Software Developer 2 Education Required: Position typically requires a bachelor’s degree and a minimum five years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications:

Additional Software Skills

  • Working knowledge of augmented reality concepts and solutions

  • Experience in conceptualizing, prototyping and developing games and interactive presentations

  • Working knowledge of Substance Painter

  • Experience using configuration management tools like GiT, TFS, etc.

  • Knowledgeable of current gaming and game design trends

  • Experience with mobile app development

  • Enthusiastic about gaming culture

  • UI/UX skills

  • Data visualization experience

  • 2+ years of Unity experience

  • Be results-oriented and able to thrive in a fast-paced environment

  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal

  • Experience in interacting with customers

  • Experience in a web structural framework such as Angular, React, or Razor is a plus

  • Experience 3D modeling using Modo (Foundry) is a plus

  • Experience as a full stack developer with .Net or SQL

  • Interest in mentoring colleagues and students

  • A basic understanding of database concepts, including document-based data systems
